- Announces expansion of FCCL production line, a key component for flexible circuit boards widely used for smartphones and tablet PCs
- Plans to invest KRW90 billion expanding its plant in Jeungpyeong Industrial Complex, North Chungcheong Province by 2014
- Increases the country’s technology areas with local production of advanced components and a goal to become the world’s No. 1 by 2020

SK Innovation is moving fast to build new facilities in an advanced information and electronic component area where it has been recognized for its global technological competitiveness.

SK Innovation (President & CEO Jay Koo, www.SKinnovation.com) said on May 14 that it decided to build the second production line for flexible copper clad laminate (FCCL) in the Jeungpyeong Industrial Complex, North Chungcheong Province, about 126 kilometers south of Seoul, at a recent investor council meeting.

FCCL is a key component used for flexible print circuit boards (FPCBs) which are widely adopted for IT devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs. Driven by huge popularity of smart devices, the FCCL market is now growing dramatically at an annual 18% rate, and is estimated to be around KRW1 trillion by 2015.

The leading energy company plans to spend around KRW90 billion building its second FCCL production line, and open the new production facilities by 2014. When completed, the second line will increase annual production capacity of FCCL to 9 million square meters, including the first line with annual 3.5 million, as well as help the company to become one of global major suppliers.

While companies across the world shy away from facility investments facing the prolonged economic downturn, SK Innovation’s recent decision proves the company’s confidence in its technological competitiveness.

Especially, the company continues to lead growth of the market with a lineup of innovative technologies, which increase both production speed and product quality, and its ability to produce customized products, seeing demand for lighter, thinner, shorter and more compact IT devices such as smartphones grow; circuit patterns micronized; and advanced technologies increasingly required for flexibility.

Based on these strengths, the company formed a contract with the world’s largest FPCB maker Nippon Mektron in only six months since the launch of FCCL production in April 2011, accelerating its expansion into the market. In 2012, it exceeded both revenue and production volume targets.

Using the second FCCL production line as a platform, SK Innovation is moving fast to expand its sales channels in overseas markets while accelerating development of products with various purposes as well as mobile devices such as smartphones

In addition, the company aims to serve as one of major axes in expansion of the country’s technology areas with its investments in facility expansion and a goal to become the world’s No. 1 FCCL manufacturer by 2020

“The decision to build the second FCCL production line is a testament to our technological competitiveness that sets us apart from competitors and also to our management team’s commitments to investments despite the economic downturn,” said an official at SK Innovation. “We will continue to invest in producing key components which were heavily dependent on imports in the past as well as strengthening the country’s technological power in the future.”

SK Innovation is making fast moves, including expansion of the FCCL production facilities, to establish itself as an emerging major player in the information and electronic component market.

SK Innovation’s LiBS business, backed by the world’s third in-house development of LiBS in 2004, has topped accumulated revenues of KRW600 billion, with seven production lines built in 8 years. As the country’s largest and the world’s No. 3 in terms of market share, the company plans to establish itself as a global major by building lines 8 and 9 by 2014.

In the market for TAC film, one of key components for LCD polarizers, which has been predominated by Japanese manufacturers such as Fuji Film and Konica, SK Innovation is expected to be soon certified by a leading LCD manufacturer in the country. With the company’s TAC film products set to hit the market before the end of this year, it expects to help the country ease trade deficit with Japan while contributing to reinforcing competitiveness of the local display industry.
